GETTING STARTED
WHAT IS POKÉMON CHAMPIONS?
Pokémon Champions is a battle-only competitive platform and the official home of VGC — Video Game Championships. Unlike mainline Pokémon games, there is no story mode, no exploration, and no catching mechanics. Champions is built entirely around competitive battling at Level 50, providing a clean, focused platform for serious players. The game is free to start and available on both Nintendo Switch and mobile.
Champions is the official platform for Worlds 2026, meaning this is where the global competitive scene will be determined. Every tournament result, every ranking point, and every World Championship spot runs through this game.
Building your roster works differently from traditional Pokémon. You can transfer existing Pokémon from Pokémon HOME, recruit them through daily in-game rewards, or earn them by spending Victory Points from matches. The Omni Ring is the key item that enables Mega Evolution — equip it on any compatible Pokémon and they can Mega Evolve once per battle, transforming their stats and often their abilities entirely.
YOUR FIRST MATCH — WHAT TO EXPECT
Before a single move is made, both teams are revealed in full on the Team Preview screen. You see all 6 of your opponent's Pokémon and their held items, and they see yours. This mutual visibility is what makes the next decision so critical.
"Bring 6, Pick 4" is the selection that happens after Team Preview. You choose which 4 of your 6 Pokémon you will actually use in the match, based on what you observed. Your opponent is making the same choice simultaneously. This asymmetric preparation is arguably the highest-leverage decision in competitive play — the right 4 Pokémon in the right matchup wins before a move is made.
Once the match begins, each turn you simultaneously choose moves for both of your 2 active Pokémon. Both players lock in their choices at the same time, then moves resolve in order of priority and Speed. You have 20 minutes total for the entire match and 45 seconds per turn to make decisions. The win condition is simple: knock out all of your opponent's Pokémon, or be the last player with any standing.
THE STAT POINTS SYSTEM (SP)
Champions replaces the traditional EV and IV system with Stat Points. Every Pokémon in Champions has fixed 31 IVs across all six stats — no perfect IV breeding, no hidden values to worry about. Instead, you allocate SP directly to the stats you want to strengthen.
The cap is 32 SP per stat and 66 SP total across all stats combined. Each SP invested increases the relevant stat at Level 50 in a way that maps cleanly onto the classic EV system. Natures still apply their familiar 10% boost to one stat and 10% penalty to another.
All ranked matches use a Level 50 cap. Regardless of your Pokémon's actual level, they are scaled to Level 50 for competition. This means freshly recruited Pokémon are immediately usable in ranked play.
When planning SP investment, the two core questions are: where do I need to be faster, and where do I need to survive a specific hit? Most investments serve one of these two goals — either reaching a Speed tier that outruns a key threat, or reaching a bulk threshold that survives a common attack.
